Why Is EMDR So Powerful?
Do you ever feel like your reactions are not quite congruent with what actually happened?
That's because your nervous system is remembering. It's remembering all of the times in the past where you felt a similar way. Whether that be rejected, abandoned, misunderstood, small, unworthy. And so that's why the emotion is so big. So we can understand our patterns. We can understand why it is we do what we do.
However, in those moments, our body is reacting before our brain even has the chance to comprehend what's happening already. The tight chest, the sweaty palms, the face flushing that all happens before the brain is like in the mix. Okay. And so the reason why EMDR is so powerful is it activates the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
It rewires the neural pathways between understanding and survival so that we can file the memory.
The memory will always be there. The emotional charge will not.
