EMDR Therapy FAQ

We know starting EMDR therapy can bring up a lot of questions — especially if you’ve tried talk therapy in the past or you’re unsure where to begin.

Your questions, answered with compassion.

Below are answers to the most common questions we hear at Heart Centered EMDR in Kelowna. If you still have questions, we’d be happy to connect.

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma-focused therapy that helps the brain safely reprocess overwhelming or painful memories. Through guided bilateral stimulation (often with eye movements or tapping), EMDR supports the nervous system in releasing stuck trauma and returning to a regulated state.

What kinds of issues does EMDR help with?

While EMDR is best known for treating PTSD and trauma, it’s also highly effective for:

  • Anxiety and panic attacks

  • Depression

  • Grief and loss

  • Sexual abuse or childhood trauma

  • Phobias and performance anxiety

  • Shame and self-worth issues

  • Nervous system dysregulation

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

No. One of the unique aspects of EMDR is that you can heal without needing to retell or re-experience every detail of what happened. You’ll always be in control of what you share, and the process is designed to help you feel safe, supported, and grounded.

What happens during a typical EMDR session?

After an initial intake and assessment, we begin with preparation — helping you feel grounded and resourced. From there, we identify target memories or symptoms and begin bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or tones) to gently process and release stuck trauma responses. Each session is paced with care and attunement to your nervous system.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies from person to person. Some clients experience noticeable relief after just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support — especially if there’s complex or developmental trauma. We’ll work together to create a timeline that feels realistic, supportive, and sustainable for you.

Is EMDR safe?

Yes — EMDR is a highly researched, evidence-based therapy recommended by the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association for treating trauma and PTSD. That said, it’s important to work with a trained and licensed EMDR therapist who can tailor the process to your unique history and capacity.

What are your qualifications?

Ashlea Lawrenson is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RTC) with a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology. She is certified in EMDR and has specialized training in somatic and mindfulness-based therapies. With over a decade of experience, Ashlea brings both professional expertise and deep compassion to her work.

Do you offer in-person or virtual sessions?

How long are sessions, and what do they cost?

Standard sessions are 60-90 minutes in length. Longer EMDR intensives may also be available.

I’m not sure if EMDR is right for me. What should I do?

That’s completely okay. Healing starts with safety — and sometimes, that means just asking questions or exploring your options.
